What a bespoke travel advisor actually does
Bespoke travel planning starts with the traveller, not the product. Before choosing a hotel, ship, lodge or route, the first question is what kind of experience will actually suit the person travelling.
For some clients, that means a luxury expedition cruise to Antarctica, the Arctic, the Kimberley or the Coral Triangle. For others, it may be a private safari, a remote island escape, a cultural journey or a carefully paced itinerary with several moving parts.
My role is to filter the options, ask the right questions and shape the journey properly before anything is booked.
Advisor note: I work directly with clients who want travel planned with judgement, care and proper context. No call-centre feel, no handoffs, and no generic itinerary dressed up as bespoke travel.

Why work directly with Richard?
Off The Beaten Track Travel is founder-led. That means the advice, planning and decision-making come directly through me, Richard Muff.
You are not passed between departments or handed off to a faceless booking team. I stay close to the details because the details are where most travel succeeds or fails.
My role is not just to book what is available. It is to help decide what is actually right: which operator suits the traveller, which destination deserves more time, which ship has the right feel, which route is too rushed, and where a different choice may create a better journey.

The process starts with a proper conversation. I want to understand what you are considering, what has worked for you before, what you dislike, how you like to travel, what level of comfort you expect and what would make the trip feel worthwhile.

We start with your travel style, priorities, timing, comfort level, past trips and what you want this journey to achieve.
2. Filter
I help narrow the options and explain what genuinely fits, rather than overwhelming you with every possible choice.
3. Design
The itinerary is shaped around route, timing, accommodation, guides, transfers, flights and the right level of support.
4. Refine
We adjust the plan until it makes sense practically, emotionally and commercially before anything is finalised.

Expedition cruising is a good example. Two ships may visit similar places, but the onboard feel, expedition team, landing style, comfort level, cabin layout, dining, guest profile and pre/post logistics can be very different.

A lot of my work sits in the expedition and remote travel space. These trips are often where bespoke planning matters most because the wrong ship, season or travel style can completely change the experience.

I am based near Beaudesert in Queensland’s Scenic Rim and work with clients across Australia. That includes Queensland, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, regional Australia and clients who prefer to work remotely with a specialist advisor rather than visit a shopfront.
Most bespoke travel planning can be handled by phone, email and carefully structured conversations. The important part is not where you are sitting when the trip is planned. It is whether the advice is clear, the itinerary is properly matched and the person handling the trip understands what matters to you.

A bespoke travel advisor designs travel around the individual traveller rather than selling a fixed package. The role includes advice, itinerary design, supplier selection, logistics, pacing and support before and during the trip.
Is bespoke travel the same as luxury travel?
Not always. Bespoke travel can be luxurious, but the main difference is personalisation. It is about matching the trip to the traveller, whether that means high-end lodges, expedition ships, private guides, remote islands or cultural depth.
Do you only work with clients in Queensland?
No. I am based near Beaudesert in Queensland’s Scenic Rim, but I work with clients across Australia. Most planning can be handled remotely by phone and email.
What kind of trips do you plan?
I focus on luxury, expedition, remote and off-the-beaten-track journeys, including small-ship cruising, polar travel, South Pacific islands, safari, marine travel and private cultural itineraries.
Why use an advisor instead of booking direct?
Booking direct can work for simple trips. An advisor becomes valuable when the trip is complex, expensive, remote or needs careful matching between the traveller, destination, supplier and travel style.
