The Coral Triangle by Expedition Ship

This voyage aboard SH Minerva explored some of the most remote and biologically rich parts of Indonesia and West Papua. Travelling through Raja Ampat, Cenderawasih Bay, Waigeo, Pulau Ayu and remote stretches of coastline, the journey combined expedition cruising, diving, zodiac exploration and wildlife encounters into one continuous expedition arc.

Rather than functioning like a traditional cruise, the experience felt shaped by movement, discovery and daily expedition rhythm. Some days focused on remote landings and village visits. Others revolved around diving, whale sharks or navigating isolated island groups that are difficult to access independently.

Voyage Route

West Papua, Raja Ampat & Cenderawasih Bay

Sailing roundtrip from Sorong, the expedition crossed reef systems, remote islands and coastal communities throughout the Coral Triangle. The route combined iconic regions like Raja Ampat with less-visited parts of West Papua and Cenderawasih Bay.

Travelling by expedition ship made it possible to move fluidly between diving, wildlife encounters, zodiac operations and remote shore landings without the constant logistics normally involved in this part of the world.

Life Aboard

SH Minerva

SH Minerva balanced expedition capability with a calm onboard atmosphere. Zodiac operations, expedition briefings and daily landings shaped the rhythm of the voyage, while the ship itself remained comfortable and understated throughout the journey.

The experience felt less like conventional cruising and more like travelling aboard a moving expedition base. Days unfolded around conditions, wildlife, landings and exploration opportunities rather than rigid cruise structure.

Wildlife Encounters

Whale Sharks in Cenderawasih Bay

One of the defining moments of the expedition was entering the water with whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay. The experience felt remote, calm and surprisingly intimate, with encounters taking place around traditional fishing platforms in quiet waters far from mainstream tourism.

It was less about adrenaline and more about presence. The stillness of the bay, the anticipation before entering the water and the sheer scale of the animals created one of the strongest moments of the voyage.

Diving Raja Ampat

Expedition Cruising with Diving Access

Diving added another dimension to the voyage, particularly throughout Raja Ampat where reef systems, fish density and coral biodiversity constantly surrounded the expedition.

This was not a dedicated dive liveaboard. Instead, the voyage combined expedition cruising with selected diving opportunities, making it well suited to travellers who want strong underwater experiences without the intensity of a fully dive-focused trip.

Remote Papua

Village Encounters & Island Landings

Some of the most memorable moments came ashore. Remote village visits, isolated island landings and coastal encounters added an important human layer to the expedition and helped place the landscapes into context.

Arriving by zodiac created a sense of scale and remoteness that is difficult to replicate through traditional travel. These quieter moments often became some of the most meaningful parts of the voyage.

What Expedition Cruising Actually Feels Like

Expedition cruising differs from traditional cruising in one important way: flexibility matters more than schedule. Conditions, wildlife, sea state and local opportunities all influence how each day unfolds.

That unpredictability is part of the appeal. The experience feels shaped by exploration rather than performance, allowing travellers to engage more deeply with the environment and the journey itself.
