Personalised Travel Planning: My Story

Hi, I’m Richard — founder of Off The Beaten Track Travel. I specialise in personalised travel planning, creating unique journeys that uncover hidden gems and unforgettable experiences. My love of travel began on my first trip to Uluru. Standing in the heart of Australia and meeting locals, I realised how transformative authentic travel can be.

Later, an expedition cruise with Ponant from the far eastern reaches of Russia to Japan reshaped my idea of what travel could be. It wasn’t polished or predictable; it was raw, remote, and unforgettable. Those experiences taught me that the best journeys often lie off the usual tourist trail.

Over the years, I’ve explored the world through rail journeys, small group tours, expedition cruises, and independent travel. Each trip deepened my passion for uncovering hidden gems—but I also noticed something important. For many travellers, planning a trip was stressful, overwhelming, and time-consuming. That’s where personalised travel planning makes all the difference.

One of my first clients came to me with a long, complicated itinerary. I loved piecing it together. When the trip was over, they were thrilled with the seamless experience and have continued to travel with me ever since. Moments like this confirmed that helping people plan their journeys is what I was meant to do.

Richard remains our number one travel adviser. Nothing is too small or too big. From giving ideas for consideration to securing travel tickets, transfers, vehicle rental, accommodation and activities. Our recent trip to New Zealand was no exception. Although we have lived there previously, Richard sent us on a beautiful 3 day escape on our way to visit with family for Christmas. We stayed on the Coromandel Peninsula for a magical 3 nights, an absolutely beautiful area (there is much to see and do or just relax). It was wonderful having the time to relax and take in the beautiful scenery before traveling on to catch up with family and our grandchildren for Christmas. Thank you Richard.

Richard is an independent adviser who works closely with Main Beach Travel. I have worked with Richard doing extremely intricate travel itineraries over the past few years. He is very knowledgeable and provides helpful ideas and recommendations that have proven extremely useful. It is always a pleasure working with Richard. Our most recent trip was a simple one-week holiday to Lord Howe Island. Our instructions to Richard were, "We'd like to visit Lord Howe Island for about a week in autumn." It can sometimes be difficult to get accommodation on the Island (max 400 guests). As usual, Richard took care of all aspects of our trip. The accommodation he chose was excellent (Arajilla Retreat) and he had us flying from the Gold Coast direct to Lord Howe (Eastern Air Services) rather than the more expensive and less convenient Brisbane - Sydney - Lord Howe alternative (Qantas). Another great experience with Richard!

Richard Muff was a pleasure to work with, he was full of ideas, he listened to our thoughts and he planned our trip to perfection, every time we wondered about a detail we just went back to his instructions, and problems were solved.
